Post Irma Sailing - well worth it!

April 27, 2019

Last February we took another trip to the BVI aboard ARIADNE.  It was our second trip there after Irma, and after ARIADNE was repaired from the relatively light damage she sustained in the storm.

Our impressions in February were that the islands have bounced back well and the sailing industry, and the businesses that support the industry, are both recovering well.  There is clearly a lot still to do; for instance the normally busy Sopers Hole marina in the West End of Tortola was still under heavy construction when we saw it, but I understand that they have made a great deal of progress in the last few months and I expect the docks to be ready in the summer.  In the North Sound of Virgin Gorda the Marina and Restaurant at Leverick Bay is as busy as ever, but the rest of North Sound is quite empty of the usual bustle of activity around BEYC and Saba Rock.  Work has started on both sites, but its likely to be more than a year before we see them open.

In other locations business activity is thriving.  Anegada is very active, as are the businesses at Cooper Island, around the Yacht Harbor in Spanish Town, and most of the island businesses up and down the SFD channel.    Peter Island Resort is still closed, but as the Willy T has moved from its old site in the Bight of Norman Island to Great Harbor at Peter Island there is a new attraction there for sailors.

All the anchorages on Jost Van Dyke are also active.  White Bay seems as busy as ever, and the pre Irma addition of Hendos Hideout next to the Soggy Dollar Bar is well worth checking out if you haven’t come across it before.

We are looking forward to our next visit in June this year.  ARIADNE is very busy in the months leading up to the end of the season in mid/late August.  We are also seeing bookings now over the end of the year and into 2020 so if you want to take the opportunity of chartering her dont leave it too late!  Reach out and let me know what you are looking for and hopefully I will be able to meet your needs.
